LEGO Classic Space Collection
I am at the point of crying uncle on this project. When I last wrote about it, I had assembled all (except one) of the sets I had instructions for and was trying to figure out the rest by finding unique pieces, searching for sets that used those unique pieces and then going by gut instinct and a bit of trial and error. I would print off all the parts used for the set and see if I had them. If I had all but maybe one or two, I would save the pieces in a labeled plastic bag and add the missing pieces to a growing online list. After I had a half dozen or more of these sets separated, I would place an order for the missing pieces which usually only cost me less than a $1 to order. The shipping always cost more. Once those pieces came in, I would assemble the sets using online instructions found on another site. I kept rinsing and repeating until I got to what you see above.
The one exception I alluded to earlier is the Space Shuttle Atlantis set you see in the back right corner above. That was a set that one of my kids had gotten, assembled and then tore apart never to play with it again. Since it too is now obsolete and still has some value according to online resources, I thought I would add it to my collection since it is space themed as well though not of the "Classic" series.
I still haven't decided what to do but I think either way, my next step is to document everything well so that I know what is there and take pictures for showing online if I take the next step. I will then disassemble everything set at a time, making sure to keep all the pieces separated in their own labeled gallon sized ziplock back and keep them segregated from the leftover LEGOs of mostly modern sets that aren't worth anything... yet. Then if I sell them, I just have to grab the right bag and mail it off.
The site I use as a resource also has a place for selling your sets and keeps pricing statistics. If I use the the average 6 month sale price for used sets as a guide, my entire collection may be worth up to $2500 these days. I find that highly unlikely and would be happy with much less than that but since I am not in a hurry, I may try to aim for the sky with my opening price just in case... and if I proceed with the sale.
