The Last Teenager
Several years after starting my blog, I had a series I called the "Little Abbey" series about my eldest daughter as we and her experienced her birth and childhood for the first time. Eventually time ran it's course and those posts faded away. She is now in her second year of college.
I got married later than most of my peers and my wife was going through her residency soon after the birth of our first child so it was six years later before we had our second child and by then, we were in the "higher risk" category according to the doctors. But the second one arrived just fine and I started another series that I put tons of effort into naming calling it "Littler Abbey". It faded out much more quickly as there wasn't a lot of mystery left to behold or figure out. Thus our second one never got much written about her on this blog.
That likely won't change anytime soon but I saw this picture on my phone and thought I would temporarily break and show it. Above is a picture of her birthday cake which she specifically looked through many books and recipes to locate and request for us to make for her. It is a cookie dough cake with dark chocolate frosting and it was very tasty indeed. She is now officially a teenager.
I am constantly amazed at how different my two girls ended up being from each other. One got my love of science, the other my gift of humor is just one of many such differences. I would have thought that both were caused by nurture but perhaps there is a nature component in there too. One thing is for certain however, she keeps me on my toes with her wit and I love to see how she has developed and continues to mature into an adult that someday will fly from the nest like her sister did.

I don't think it is uncommon for the second child to be documented less. With us, it also happened with our two grands. BTW our two were six years apart for no reason other than that's the way that we did it.
ReplyDeleteI reckon you are probably right.
DeleteI always laughed that as a fourth child, I didn't even have a baby book!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the "littler Abbey" on this milestone. Teenage years can be both fun and filled with angst, but isn't that life, in general? The cake looks delicious!
I can’t imagine having three other siblings yet some of my ancestors had more than 12! The cake was very delicious though a bit rich for my tastes, and I like sweets!
DeleteIt seems inevitable that second children always get less "recorded" about their lives. It was the same with me and my younger brother. (Much to his annoyance!)
ReplyDeleteI guess the tables may turn these next five years as I likely will over compensate knowing the day when both are gone is coming fast.
DeleteAlthough I don't think we're locked in, I'm a big believer in nature. That cake sounds fabulous; I would certainly have a piece (or two). Happy Teenagerhood to Younger Daughter!
ReplyDeleteI know it all challenges my thoughts on nature vs nurture.
DeleteEd, it is amazing how different our children can turn out.
ReplyDeleteJust as amazing as how quickly time flies. We are within two years of having the last child through her undergraduate degree.
The first part surprised me. I guess I felt they would be more similar.
DeleteYour second sentence doesn’t however.
Having 4 children, I can attest to how each becomes so different in so many ways from each other. I only know of one family of 3 girls, or maybe it was 4, and they were like cookie cutter same as their mother - goody goody follow the rules, don't get out of line, dress alike, etc. Kind of boring. But then they probably thought I raised a terrible family of independent thinkers and do-ers.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a great way of looking at it. Family get togethers in the future will be more interesting with dissimilarities.
DeleteI remember those wonderful posts about your girls, but I feel old knowing they're well on their way to adulthood.
ReplyDeleteYou and I both!
DeleteWhat a lovely tribute to your daughters, and especially your new teenager. They grow up so quickly. Have to mention too, that I just love the cake.
ReplyDeleteThe last one feels like she grew up faster than the first.
DeleteHope the teen years are good to her and to you! Nice cake!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think my new teenager thought it was the best cake ever.
