Your Wildlife Fix

I am away on a road trip and will be back in a week or so.

At long last, we finally have some bluebirds that have hatched out. It has been a tough start for them. Despite being bigger than sparrows/wrens, the bluebirds kept being fought off every time they showed interest in nesting in our bluebird house between the house and the garden. The sparrows would attack the poor male bluebird until he gave up and flew off and then throw one of their quick built nests up inside the bird house. Every day, I would go remove the nest and toss it in our compost bin. This went on for TWO MONTHS!

Evidently the sparrows got the hint at that point and either built a nest somewhere else or moved on to someplace with less picky humans. After a week or two of inactivity, suddenly I saw the bluebird pair had come back, built a nest and laid four eggs. Typically they lay five but this was during a heat wave and late in the season which may have limited them. It was so hot, I was worried that they eggs might not hatch but 15 days later, I found this one morning when I looked inside.

Fortunately the week ahead is supposed to be mild. In the past, we've gotten some heat waves hot enough to kill the bluebird hatchlings before they could fledge and July is normally our hottest month so it still may be a bit iffy if the next 21 days will be cool enough for them to grow and fledge. But I'm hopeful just the same. I do like seeing bluebirds filling our trees versus the every present sparrows/wrens. I'm not a bird expert so I don't know which I have other than they are small grayish patterned birds.

Not sure how this will post or if you will hear the music in the background or if it will be restricted due to the music which I'm sure is copyrighted. So I will describe what happened.

I was working in the garage on my coffee table project applying a coat of finish to the top of it when I heard some scraping sounds on the concrete out front. For some reason, two deer were walking across my front lawn, down my driveway and across the street into the neighbor's side yard. Since I have one hand gloved and covered in finish gel, I had to cross body grab my phone out of my pocket with my left (non-dominate) hand and get the video app up and recording. It also explains why it is shaking a bit and why Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" was blasting in the background. I suppose I could throw the video into my editing software, strip the sound out of it and put some other more appropriate sound in it but it seems like too much work to do right this minute so I won't. Hopefully this video will be posted while I am away on vacation and you can get a wildlife fix.

    1. I guess not bad for using my south paw.

  2. Thanks for sharing the bluebirds' nest and the uninvited deer. I am not sure what to make of the chucking out of sparrows' nests. I would be pissed off if I was a sparrow in your neighbourhood. Perhaps you should consider a few more nesting boxes on your property. Tree shade could act like basic air conditioning. Have another happy roadtrip! I wonder where you are bound this time?

    1. We have hundreds if not thousands of sparrows around judging from their nests everywhere and how many I see flying around but we don't have many bluebirds which is why I help mother nature play natural selection. I hope the sparrows are pissed and stay away.

  3. Ed Sheeran makes a pretty good soundtrack for the deer! Often musicians (or their representatives) will strike a deal with YouTube to allow their music on uploaded videos -- maybe Ed has done that.

    1. I'm glad to find the video still up and playable so perhaps Ed did have some sort of agreement. I'm happy that it was that song and not a worse one.

  4. I don't know if the final egg hatched, but I enjoyed seeing it. Much prettier than the not-so-pretty hatchlings. I get a deer fix most every afternoon when they come to browse under our pear trees. The dang dogs just sit there and watch them. (unlike on my morning walks when they're out for blood... literally)

    1. They were all gone when I arrived home last night so I hope they fledged alright. My neighbor did check on them while we were away and all four had hatched. When we returned last night, there was a doe and her twin fawns standing around under our apple trees out front too, totally unconcerned about our arrival!

  5. Good for you for being the champion of the bluebirds! I still like deer even though many friends and family say they're a nuisance. My older daughter has lost many plants to them.

    1. They are a nuisance for sure here and lost their charm but I do like watching them as they pass through our yard.

  6. How wonderful is that - bluebird babies! Your deer shot came out fine and who doesn't like Ed Sheeran? The only time I saw a deer in the open was during one of my daughter's soccer games in California in the evening. An adult deer dashed across the fields while the game was in play. It was the highlight of the game, lol.

    1. You should visit me. I can show you a handful of deer every morning and evening, more if we were to go for a drive.

  7. Blue birds face a nasty challenge with house sparrows here. good for you to keep at it and fight the house sparrows.

    1. I'm am impressed at the voracity of sparrows. They really put the hurt on the bluebirds when they tried to fight back.

    1. According to my neighbor who started this project, our neighborhood has hatched out a couple hundred bluebirds in the last four or five years.

  9. Neat little video of the deer. And it's nice to hear you've got a successful bluebird nest. We have a lot of bluebirds, but I've never found a nest.

    1. They like cavities out in the open which is why our box is out in our lawn away from trees. I imagine that makes them kind of rare since those sorts of nesting spots would be few.

  10. Thanks for the wildlife fix and the Ed Sheeran ear worm. Good luck to the bluebirds. Enjoy your trip.

  11. I love bluebirds, but we also see them chased from the bluebird box in our yard. One year, I'll make a few more and put them around the garden.

    1. That is on my list of things to do too. Maybe later this year when other projects begin to taper off.
