Little of This, Little of That
I've seen a handful of these vehicles from a distance while I've been driving around and not long ago, I saw quite a number of them on the evening news burning, but I've never seen one up close until recently. If you recall, I dug out an old Apple IIe computer from our storage room, cleaned it up and put it up for sale on Marketplace. Despite being clearly stating I would sell it "to the best offer" and tagging the ad with the words "if you are reading this, it is still available", I fielded about 20 people asking if it was free or still available before I finally got one person who seemed interested in it. We worked out a deal and a couple days later, he arrived to pick it up in the above vehicle. It turned out he was also mechanical engineer who graduated from my alma mater so we spent some time chatting about campus from two different perspectives (he was twenty years younger) and about the careers of mechanical engineers these days. (Like many middle class jobs, it has been gutted by our economy and shipped over seas and not as stable as it was back in my day.) He also let me look into the cabin and opened up the retractable bed cover to let me see his ride. He collects old computers and the Apple IIe was missing from his collection. I think it went to a good home.
For nearly a year now, two of the neighboring houses have been vacant and the remaining one is for sale. I tell everyone I think I must be the problem. Fortunately one of the vacant houses sold earlier this spring and the new neighbors moved in. I dropped off a loaf of homemade sourdough bread to the fellow but he was busy so I didn't stay long. This morning, his wife dropped by to chat, mostly about what went on last night as I slept blissfully unaware. From her perspective, being woken up to a knock on the glass pane of her door and seeing two strangers wandering around in the street was a bit unnerving and I don't blame her. She called the police and they came and spent an hour apparently just down the road from my driveway. After we parted ways, I went to check my camera feed and could see that they were heading into town when their SUV looked like it broke down. After ten minutes or so of trying to get it running without success, they came to knock on my door (didn't use the backlit and functioning doorbell) at 2:30 a.m. and when they didn't get any response, they did some dancing in front of my house and proceeded down to my new neighbor's house where she had a much different perspective. I thought it was all pretty funny. From my perspective, I think they were pretty drunk and probably heading home and not up to anything nefarious. But they picked the wrong neighborhood to break down in because it earned them a ride in the back of one of the three squad cars that arrived on the scene and their SUV was hauled away on a tow truck an hour later.
Sounds like you missed the neighborhood block party! Glad all is well. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThat is one block party I'm glad I missed!
DeleteTwo for the price of one today. I kind of wish my old Atari 800 was still kicking around, not that I would use it, but thinking of it is somewhat nostalgic.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly why I held onto the Apple computer for so long. But eventually I decided I valued free space more than I did nostalgia.
DeleteEd, I completely accept that nature operates on far different principles - "Old B(!*@ Nature" as the late Gene Logsdon put it, and that rabbits as pets and rabbits eating food supplies are two different things.
ReplyDeleteI do not really understand either the love of or hatred of the Cybertruck. There are plenty of car and truck designs that have appeared outlandish and ridiculous to the eye (The 1970's called: They would consideration of the Gremlin and Hornet to be reconsidered); some (like the Delorean) went on to become iconic.
I, too, did some stupid things late at night once upon at time (although never drinking and driving) - relatively harmless, but stupid. The fact I did not get hauled away may have been a miracle.
I must admit, the Cybertruck has grown on me slightly with time. I still don't think I would ever own one but as the owner of the one above said, it has a certain appeal to those of us who grew up with Deloreans on the "big screen".
DeleteWe've used some of those spicy home-brews and they work okay, but like anything else topical, have to be reapplied after a rain.
ReplyDeleteIt worked but lately we've been going through a period of late evening showers frequently and by morning, they have been back in the patch eating the peas. At this rate, I'm not sure I'm going to get any to maturity.
DeleteOK, that video is hilarious. The SUV may have broken down, but apparently the radio still worked!
ReplyDeleteI suspect that those people who ask if something is "still available" are actually just collecting e-mail addresses. Anytime I post something on Freecycle or, in the old days, Craigslist, I get a bunch of people asking that same question. I don't even respond. Let them read the freakin' ad.
I don't respond to anyone anymore who asks a question answered in the posting. I figure if they can't read, they aren't serious buyers anyway.
DeleteSo, what did you think of the Tesla "truck"?
ReplyDeleteI am holding onto my old Mac which I call the Manapua Mac. It is so charming with a half dome base and a screen on a pole that has limited swivel. Hopefully I can get it converted to being a monitor screen connected to an iPhone to watch Netflix, etc. However, the video quality will be poor with the pixel size of old.
I was impressed upon the finish quality of it. I thought it might be fairly rough in quality being a recent vehicle unlike say a Toyota on its 20+ generation of design. But I am a utilitarian when it comes to vehicles and owning a flashy vehicle is not something that interest me.
DeleteI have several old computers to get rid of, most of them more "modern" than that. The one at my mom's is running Win95. :) It was her solitaire/Free Cell machine. I hate the style of those cyber trucks; they do look like garbage cans.
ReplyDeleteI still have my last computer. At some point now that my current one is functioning and I haven't noticed any missing files, I'll remove the hard drive out of the old one and take the rest to the recycling station where they have a bin for used electronics. I have every hard drive of every computer I've ever owned... about half a shoe box full at this point. At some point, I might get a very hot fire and take care of those too and then properly dispose of the remains.
DeleteI saw one up close...I was not very impressed...I wonder if it has streaks like my stainless steel fridge? There was a party in your neighborhood...first a hawk or an owl and then young men:)
ReplyDeleteThe stainless was a very matte finish so I don't think it would streak like your... or my stainless fridge.
DeleteSo the rabbit was a bad guy. I put a barrier around my garden to keep them out.
ReplyDeleteI have an electrified fence but evidently rabbit fur/skin doesn't transmit through to ground.
DeleteI only saw one of those Tesla trucks for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I had no clue, but when I described it to Dan, he knew what it was. Not exactly aesthetic.
ReplyDeleteYour middle-of-the night visitors do look like they had too much to drink. But nowadays, pounding on someone's door to wake them up doesn't seem like a very safe idea!
I'm with you are garden ravaging rabbits. I've had them as pets and loved them, but they are very destructive in a garden.
I guess for me, I would rather have a truck or a sleek looking car but not some of both combined.
DeleteI have pondered what the conversation would have been like and what I would have done had I heard their knocks and answered the door. I'm glad I didn't hear them.
For better or for worse, the Cybertrucks evoke a strong response in my neighborhood. People make assumptions about the kind of person who would buy one and what their politics are. Some have been vandalized. It's really kind of a sad situation. Glad your late night visitors were harmless!
ReplyDeleteI get that but don’t understand why people are so judgmental. That fellow and I talked for ten minutes and not once did politics come up.
DeleteThat hawk waited for the rabbit to stuff himself with your peas--kind of like "corn fed beef". Lot's going on.
ReplyDeletePea stuffed rabbit sounds pretty tasty!
