Solution For Blogs with Embedded Comments Part 2

Like so many, I have been having trouble commenting on any blog that has embedded comments turned on. The work around which I wrote about as someone with my embedded comments to turned on was to turn them off. This allows anyone to comment using their Google identity.

But, it really shifts the burden of the problem to those with embedded comments used in their blog who might not realize that people are no longer commenting or may not notice the problem for one reason or another. Also, several people who have embedded comments on their blog weren't having problems going to other people's blogs with embedded comments and leaving comments.

Something else was at play here and after a google search, I figured it out.

Google or Apple apparently did an update to one of their apps and flipped a button that wasn't flipped before. If you go to Settings on your iPad and scroll down to either Safari or Chrome (I did this to both since I use Chrome) and look for an option that says "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking." This needs to be turned on. It was turned on in Safari but not for Chrome. Once I turned it on, immediately I was able to comment on every blog again, even those with embedded comments using my iPad, something I haven't been able to do the last couple days.

I don't understand it other than I went from having problems to not having problems in a matter of minutes.

  1. Prevent cross-site tracking was already turned on in my safari on my MacBook and I'm still not able to comment on certain blogs In fact, yours is back to making me do anonymous again. Kelly

    1. The article mentioned that this was due to a corrupt cookie. At least on an iPad, I can select block all cookies in the same area of settings to remove them and then turn it back on. Perhaps that might work?

  2. Same for my iPhone. And I don't have Chrome or any other browser on either device. -Kelly

    1. Shoot, it worked for me. If you try select block all cookies and it still doesn't work, let me know and I'll revert back to the comments that aren't embedded again.

  3. Okay.... I cleared my cache, deleted all cookies, and started fresh. Still doesn't work on yours and a select few Blogger blogs. I give up for the time being. Kelly (don't change your blog settings just for me)

    1. Definitely feel free to leave a comment as anonymous or email if you prefer. You were having problems with commenting even before this so there may be other issues at play.

  4. Ed I feel like a big dummy here but I just saw your comment on my blog, and I thought my comments were embedded?

    1. They are and so some may not be able to comment on your blog (or mine) without clearing their cookies of whatever one got corrupted or you changing your comments to not be embedded.

  5. I haven't been having issues although the comment "box" is back to being a line and I'm not ever sure if the comment goes through. I'm glad you figured it out though; when something works and then doesn't, I am bothered no end. (and need to get to the bottom of it)

    1. I’m just happy I can reply again using my iPad as I’m doing now. I just wish I knew more specifics on what is going on to help others with the same problem.

  6. Hopefully my other comment went through. The old format would tell me that my comment would be visible after approval. Now it doesn't say that when I have the Notify me button clicked. Another mystery!

    1. It did. Another thing I’ll have to look into.🙄

    2. On another blog with embedded comments, when I comment and hit publish, a popup briefly appears below saying comment moderation is turned on and then it disappeared. It was visible for only a second or two. I’ve made lots of comments today and that was the first time I saw that so it apparently is easy to miss.

    1. I’m glad it worked for you. I’m not sure why it won’t work with Kelly.

  8. That's the conclusion I came to as well. But I've noticed a new "problem" with comments. Google tells me I need to sign into my google account, but then grays out that option. I can either do Anonymous, or Name/URL, which is extra steps, but at least I can comment. I discovered this on my photography blog this morning, and now here too.

    1. I found a post that you wrote back in October of last year with essentially the same problem but it seemed as if it eventually went away.

This problem always allowed me to comment too as anonymous or typing in my name and URL. For me, selecting google was available but did nothing but refresh the page and prompt me to select again. When I cleared out my cookies and set the settings in Safari and Chrome the same, suddenly selecting google worked again on my iPad. Using my desktop was never an issue during any of this.

  9. Ed, ignore my last comment here. I see what the difference is now with embedded comments. I've never had any pop up Windows on my blog, I wonder why I haven't had any problems? Hey, where is my last comment here?

    1. My guess it is your device and/or settings. Those that seem to have the problem commenting are using iPads. I couldn't comment with my iPad but could with my desktop. On the iPad, by adjusting my settings, I now can comment using it again. I also found that it you turn embedded comments off on the blog, it will also allow those having problems to comment again.

  10. You are such a sleuth. No wonder you do so well on Ancestry. I will have a look. Now I will will have to mark this post as unread in Feedly, so I can find it again when I'm on the tablet. It's a hard life.
