Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

Steve over at Shadows and Light posted a picture not to long ago of an airport scene that he had shot in which Google had imposed snow onto. It wasn't so bad that Google had artificially created snow but it was an indoor scene in an airport so was a bit out of place. But it made me look at what google has done to my photographs. I had three photos in which Google has created snow upon and while I remember taking one of those photos, I don't recall taking either of these. The top one looks like a tide pool along the gulf coast, a place I've visited many times in the past and I would probably take a picture of such an interesting sight but I have no idea what the bottom picture is about. Oil in a wok? I have a lot of pictures where the snow would blend in much better than these two pictures so it makes me wonder what sort of algorithm they used to choose these.

Like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, I may never know the answer.

    1. Perhaps that is why I never heard of it until Steve mentioned it.

  2. Haha, I'm a little lost here; where is Google doing this, adding snow to your photos? In older blog posts? What the heck is going on??

    1. When you go to add a photo to a post, you have an option of uploading one from your computer or selecting one from "Google Photos". I'm not sure how the pictures ended up in Google Photos but I had about six in there and these two had added snow along with one more I didn't post.

  3. Since I don't use Blogger anymore, I'm not sure how I'd find Google Photos and don't know if anything would be there.

At first glance, I thought the first photo was a sandy beach, so the snow seemed out of place. The second photo reminded me of looking through a windshield on a rainy night. Not a snowy night.

    1. I'm not sure how to find it either without using Blogger's new post template. The first photo is definitely a shallow tidal pool along the gulf coast beach. I remember taking a series of photos of the interesting sand ripples. The second one I don't remember taking but looks like oil in the bottom of a pan when heated up. I wouldn't put it past myself to take a picture of something like that either.

  4. I wonder if the effect is temporary for the season.

The phone transition went smoothly. With Apple you put the old and new side-by-side and follow the prompts. But maybe I'll blog it because there was another aspect to the situation.

    1. I think the side by side wouldn't work for us because we jumped 7 generations of iPhones and the operating systems weren't compatible.

  5. I've noticed snow in some old photos of mine that I was looking at--I found it annoying as I was looking for a particular pic. Speaking of snow, you're still quite dry, I hear. I hope you didn't get that latest stream of bad weather yesterday.

    1. We did get hit with 82 mph winds at one point and lost a couple trees and probably a trees worth of branches from the rest. But the house and new building held their ground and we are all safe. Also, we are still dry from fall and never got those November rains that we usually get.

  6. In any case, it looks nice! I only saw snow once in my life in Narita, Japan. It was magical.

    1. There is a Diary of a Snow Shoveler you should read. It sums up my feelings about snow on an annual basis.

  7. I didn't realize that google could do that. I don't trust most pictures these days because so much can be added, faked or photo shopped.

  8. So, they don't have the time to fix all the problems with Blogger, but they have time to run around putting snow on peoples' photos. Sheesh.

    1. I don't think it was a Blogger thing per se but a Google thing though both are owned by Google.

  9. Tootsie Pop? Is that another name for part of a lady? We don't call them tootsie pops in England.

  11. Darn! I left a comment with my ipad and it disappeared so I'm switching to my MacBook.
Hmmm... I just tried doing the Google Photos and see only my photos. So weird. Anyway, I think your snowfall is pretty cool.

    1. These are both pretty old photos so there may be a time element involved.

  12. That Tootsie Pop reference really took me back! I will have to see if Google has been messing with my pics. Other than one big snow here, we've had rain and sleet.

  13. How bizarre! Yeah, you gotta wonder how Google "decided" to add snow to these! (Both cool photos, though!)
