The Sex Lives of Aliens

My wife is currently unemployed and has been looking for something to pick up the time. Long story short, ever since the Affordable Care Act was passed, the medical industry has been going through rapid changes and part of those changes have been massive corporations gobbling up and absorbing all the private practices. After several mergers and trades, the clinic my wife practices at was finally just closed since it is without a hospital facility where all the money making procedures occur. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements generally are only enough to pay the bills and vary state to state. Iowa ranks 50th out of 52 regions in the United States for the amount reimbursed by our federal government under the ACA and so rural places where the population tends to be older and on Medicare and Medicaid are struggling to remain solvent, unless they are partnered with a hospital where more lucrative things like MRI's, ultrasounds and other specialty tests are done.

Despite all this, we are rolling with the punches. I urged my wife to just retire but she refused. She loves helping others and wants to continue. Fortunately there are other clinics around (also owned by large corporations) that are also attached to hospitals so still able to eke out a living under our current medical system. She has no shortage of job offers and will accept one eventually but wants to take a few months off to see how retired life might be someday. As a result, the above picture came about.

I have an acoustic guitar that I bought decades ago and started to learn how to play it. But life intervened, i.e. my instructor got laid off and moved away, and I just never picked it up again. My wife decided she wanted to learn how to play it but was having difficulties pressing the strings down with enough force to play chords. Her instructor suggested getting an electric guitar which is much easier in that aspect. And so we found ourselves in a town not too far away buying a gently used electric guitar from someone. I was a bit surprised by what he had displayed on his coffee table while we were starting the inspection/negotiation process of making a deal and snapped the above picture surreptitiously while he happened to be in another room for a few seconds.

  1. Even aliens must have problems with their sex lives.

    1. I wasn't sure if it was a problem solving book or one warning of potential increases in the alien population or something else all together.

  2. Well, now I am curious!

I am sorry to hear about your wife's unemployment. I am a little caught on the other side: our currently supplied health coverage seems to cover out almost nothing until you hit "The Threshold", which we may have finally hit. The only thing I have learned from this is that cash works equally well and may be easier.

    1. It wasn't unexpected. Like your Hammerfall 2.0, we kind of saw it coming.

  3. I noticed the 3d printed creatures right away. Alien Sex...hmmm:)

    1. Funny, that is all my wife noticed too. I was the one who noticed the book. Maybe that is a telling different between the sexes.

  4. You can still buy the book...19 exotic tales of love.

    1. I hadn't thought to check to see if I could buy it or learn what it was about. That will be my next stop.

  5. I was wondering where your title was leading... I'd be sure to clean off that guitar, really well. I also hope your wife finds a new position. Our health care is so screwed up, but if you want to move to Western Virginia, have her contact me and I can put her in contact with a wonderful non-profit health center (but there are also several hospitals in our area in danger of closing).

    1. Thank you for the offer. Likely from what I have seen, she could literally go just about anywhere that is somewhat rural and have a job before the day ended. We aren't interested in moving at this point so will likely take our chances locally for the time being.

    2. Hope your wife finds an excellent place to work; we can't afford to lose any excellent doctors. Already it's tough to find and pay for medical care.

    3. I think she will and best of all, will have a better work/family life balance out of it.

  6. That IS an interesting assortment of stuff. Sorry about your wife's somewhat involuntary retirement, but I hope she enjoys herself until she's ready to re-enter the workforce!

    1. I'm guessing the former owner of the electric guitar could answer that question but not me!

    1. I'm guessing she will make a decision from the multiple offers shortly though she will likely wait until after our upcoming month long vacation to actually start work.

    2. Are you headed to the Philippines by any chance? It's been awhile, hasn't it?

    3. The chances are near certainty! It has.

  9. Like Jeff, was not sure where this was leading but, as usual, an interesting post! I guess your wife is fortunate in that she does have choices and can also take some time off. (How did healthcare get become such a colossal cluster?!) For now, sounds like a win for her and for the family. Best to all of you.

    1. We are definitely fortunate compared to many if not most that she has a choice and in no hurry to make one. My theory is that when non medical trained politicians make wholesale changes to our medical system without really understanding the issues of why it is broken, these sorts of things are inevitable. We have spent the last decade arguing who is going to pay for everything instead of fixing what wasn’t working. Thus far they have only changed what some pay for medical care without a clue of how the medical industry would react to those changes which in my non-medically trained mind seem painful obvious and what has been occurring since the passage of the ACA.

  10. It's so nice that your wife isn't pressured one way or another. Having choices is a blessing.

I appreciate the concise summary of what's happened in our health care system. Some things never should have been industrialized and that's one of them.

    1. It has problems both then and now and those problems should be fixed. But spending so many years fighting over who pays for the still broken system isn’t doing us any favors in the meantime.

  11. We want your wife in Hawaii! We are sadly lacking in medical doctors here. And there are lots of people in need of her care.
