Nature Friday

In opposition of Black Friday, we chose to spend our day out in nature instead of joining the masses in a glut of consumerism. We headed to a little known spot that doesn't get advertised so guarantees us the peace and solitude we seek. It mostly hugs a band of rock on a nameless mountainside.

Eventually the way forward narrows as the world falls away to both sides.

The end of the journey is here on a point of rock with a 270 degree view of the world for miles.

Since the point is a fairly short hike and the day still young, I set off along a section of river that is usually lightly traveled but highly scenic. Above is a picture of a spring that trickles down a rock to a nearby ledge where it cascades down into the river below.

The river below flows through a multitude of channels between the rock face I'm standing on and the one across the river from me. Right now the bulk of the river flows up next to the opposing bluff. Two years prior, it ran up against the bluff that I am standing on. Time changes things.

Time has allowed for the low water bridge over the river to be repairs. It was destroyed last year by the very flood that moved the main channel of the river from the near bluff to the opposing one in the previous photo.

Time hasn't changed the beautiful green color of the river though.

Even with signs of the turmoil it went through last year still present.

I suppose that is why I still love coming here and taking pictures on a day when others are ransacking shopping areas for ways to spend less money.

  2. Looks like a good place to go fishing for Smallmouth Bass and maybe Channel Cats.

    1. I'm not sure as too what kind of fish are in that river but since it is spring fed and cold, I'm guessing there is trout here and there. Many years ago I tried my hand at fishing there in some pools and I think we hooked some if memory serves me correct but it just seemed like too much work to just enjoying the beauty everywhere.

  3. Beautiful, Ed. The trees have such small boles.

  4. The one think I like best about Thanksgiving time is shopping for great stuff at bargain prices. Still, I can understand your joy in taking in Nature's beauty instead.

    1. I suspect a lot of the bargains are due to markups in the weeks/days leading up to this season but I'm sure there are bargains to be had. For me, the savings isn't worth the effort but I understand that most people are not like me.

  5. I love that panoramic view! With all our trees and hills, it's not a sight I often see unless I go east of the mountains. Although I didn't hike, I did take a walk. I've never done Black Friday and don't intend to!

    1. As far as views goes, it isn't terribly scenic other than you can see quite far across a wide area which is quite unusual for this part of the world. The only thing that comes close is standing on a treeless summit of a peak out west.

  6. Beautiful, Ed! We spent time on Black Friday out on one of the many walking trails in Hot Springs. (Pat included!)

    1. It sounds like my kind of Black Friday! I have spent a little time in Hot Springs over the years but really should spend a longer amount than I have to more fully explore it.
