I'm Getting Old
I surreptitiously took this photo the other day of a trend I am seeing with more frequency. People buying white sneakers and then wearing plastic bags on them presumably to keep them looking white. I'll go out on a limb and assume that at some point, they will get to where they are going and remove said bags while inside and then put on the bags again to return home.
I don't understand all the labor that goes into preserving something that likely nobody will notice. The only reason I noticed was because this boys feet were twice as wide as normal, kind of like a duck and flapping in the breeze. But then again, perhaps that is one of those assumptions that makes an A$$ of me (reference to an old saying about assuming). Perhaps in the world that I don't frequent much anymore, the cleanliness of white shoes is actually quite noticeable among the younger generations, but only when inside.

I seem to recall a white sneaker fad quite a long time ago, even in winter, but I don’t recall the plastic bags. I don’t imagine they stand up for very long.
ReplyDeleteI can't either. Plus I would think they would be treacherous to wear on any sort of snow covered surface!
DeleteEd, during high school band we had to do this (we had white shoes as well), but the shoes came off for performance and then we had to polish them again.
ReplyDeleteI suspect part of the reason for the preservation is the amount of money that such shoes command now.
Back in my marching band days, we just had a white dauber that we all touched up our white shoes prior to the performance.
DeleteI suspect price may be a part of it but again, I'm out of touch as my shoes typically fall on the cheaper side of the scale.
What a trend! But shoes are very expensive now. Maybe white shoes staying white is the new trend. My DiL is a high school teacher and said white crew socks are a returning thing. My high school band marched with white shoes. We used to dab white shoe polish on the canvas sneakers to them sparkly white for our military style marching. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteWe did the white polish daubing too! I know white vehicles are the latest trend and have been for awhile so perhaps it makes sense that white shoes are also trending.
DeleteI've never seen this and would definitely roll my eyes. I admit that I hate getting my new walking shoes dirty and wet for the first time, but once they are, it's fine. They aren't white though.
ReplyDeleteI would never buy all white shoes, exactly for the reason that they would show dirt so easily!
DeleteI would slip and fall if I covered my shoes while walking. I recall seeing shoe covers that have non slip soles and wrap around the tops of shoes on the web - maybe Amazon. I don't wear white shoes. I have sparkly ones in black, blue, and beige. No one notices if the are dirty because they only see the glitz.
ReplyDeleteI've seen something similar that are waterproof and meant to save your feet from getting wet. Back in the day, we used to line the INSIDE of our shoes with bread sacks to accomplish the same thing.
DeleteI wear dirty sneakers, I have gravy down my front , and holes in my jumpers….who cares
ReplyDeleteMaybe an extra large garbage bag is in order!
DeleteI think I would just not get white sneakers. I prefer clogs anyway!
ReplyDeleteClogs are handy but I would prefer dirty white sneakers if I had to walk very far.
DeleteShoes and clothing are meant to be worn, so I really don't get this. In fact, I might laugh (inappropriately) if I came across this in real life. Good job of covert photography!
ReplyDeleteIt helped the young man was facing away from me and listening to his Beats.
DeleteBut slippery! I wore plastic bags over my leaky rubber boots the Spring of 1997 during the great flood...did ok but they are really slippery on ice:)
ReplyDeleteI’ve never done so over shoes but have inside shoes.
