LEGO Classic Space Collection
I am at the point of crying uncle on this project. When I last wrote about it, I had assembled all (except one) of the sets I had instructions for and was trying to figure out the rest by finding unique pieces, searching for sets that used those unique pieces and then going by gut instinct and a bit of trial and error. I would print off all the parts used for the set and see if I had them. If I had all but maybe one or two, I would save the pieces in a labeled plastic bag and add the missing pieces to a growing online list. After I had a half dozen or more of these sets separated, I would place an order for the missing pieces which usually only cost me less than a $1 to order. The shipping always cost more. Once those pieces came in, I would assemble the sets using online instructions found on another site. I kept rinsing and repeating until I got to what you see above.
The one exception I alluded to earlier is the Space Shuttle Atlantis set you see in the back right corner above. That was a set that one of my kids had gotten, assembled and then tore apart never to play with it again. Since it too is now obsolete and still has some value according to online resources, I thought I would add it to my collection since it is space themed as well though not of the "Classic" series.
I still haven't decided what to do but I think either way, my next step is to document everything well so that I know what is there and take pictures for showing online if I take the next step. I will then disassemble everything set at a time, making sure to keep all the pieces separated in their own labeled gallon sized ziplock back and keep them segregated from the leftover LEGOs of mostly modern sets that aren't worth anything... yet. Then if I sell them, I just have to grab the right bag and mail it off.
The site I use as a resource also has a place for selling your sets and keeps pricing statistics. If I use the the average 6 month sale price for used sets as a guide, my entire collection may be worth up to $2500 these days. I find that highly unlikely and would be happy with much less than that but since I am not in a hurry, I may try to aim for the sky with my opening price just in case... and if I proceed with the sale.

Ya dun gud.
ReplyDeleteNow to prep them for sale and see if I can sell them.
DeleteOpen a store. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI'm not that committed. But I wouldn't mind a little bit of cash and one less storage tote on the shelves.
DeleteThat is a lot of space stuff! Good luck if you do decide to put them up for sale. I guess there is a market for most anything.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I will try selling them as a complete set first to minimize time but may have to sell a set at a time which will maximize profits at the cost of time.
DeleteYou are unbelievably organized and focused. Your teachers must have loved you.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I ever had a teacher complain about me in school.
DeleteAs I constantly tell John, things are worth only what people will pay for them. He has an inflated idea of how much he should get for his treasures; thus, he still has TOO many of them. You sound much more realistic!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I would see them just for the space but knowing that they are worth a bit more than even I had thought, I might try to maximize my profits if it doesn't take a lot of time. I just hate selling things online.
DeleteAim big!!
ReplyDeleteTo the moon!
DeleteYou made a lot of progress! Keeping all those sets organized seems like a huge task. I hope you're not like me, where I think I've figured it out only to find later that I wasn't as organized as I thought.
ReplyDeleteI certainly hope that won't be the case. Between the organizing online, on a spreadsheet and in my office, I feel like I am prepared but only time will tell.
DeleteLegos are going well online everywhere. I just looked up a minifig I acquired at a garage sale and it could be worth $60 without original packaging and used. So yeah, the money could surprise you!
ReplyDeleteThe minifigure prices seem insane to me. Mine are all well played with so not likely to garner top price but still, I see other similar ones selling for $20!
