Impromptu Bookcase
On our past Florida trip, we spent one very cold afternoon stopping at a couple of nearby pawn shops to see what there might be to see. As we walked towards the entrance of the store, our daughter had looked at that bookshelf and thought it would be perfect for her new apartment which she will move into during the summer between semesters of college. I thought it would too but there just wasn't enough room to haul it back to Iowa with us with five people and all our luggage. Besides, it was a bit on the rickety side too.
But I am a woodworker.
So in between my LEGO project, my genealogy research on the albums belonging to my great great aunt and designing the new bedroom furniture I promised my wife, I spent some time working out a design for a bookshelf for my daughter as an apartment warming gift of sorts. I stayed close to the design though I will vary the joints a bit and make the shelves fixed instead of floating so that it will be more sturdy for all those college textbooks. I also plan to use some contrasting woods, likely red oak and walnut. Red oak is widely available at my local big box store and I have some walnut leftover from my coffee table project last year. It also happens to be the theme I'm shooting for with our new bedroom furniture so any excess wood here can pour into the next project.
Weather permitting, I may even start working on this soon so that when the temperatures stay warm(ish) during the evening hours, I will have it ready for finishing.
I will have to ask my granddaughter if she has any physical texts. Surely she must. But I guess you can underline electronic books too. 😄
ReplyDeleteActually, there are very few texts these days. My daughter didn't say she wanted the bookshelf for books. That was just my old school brain doing some wishful thinking. She probably needs the bookshelf to store all her electronic devices!
DeleteLooks like a fun project. I need to get busy building a bunch of bookcases as I get closer to retirement and will have to have a place to keep the books I now have in my office.
ReplyDeleteI have a large built in bookcase down in the family room that holds most of my book collection. I think that was one of my first projects when I moved into this house. Priorities!
DeleteI will be interested, as always, to see the final product Ed.
ReplyDeleteI’ll likely have a post or two on my progressive.
DeleteIt has a Mission style vibe, what a good project for you!
ReplyDeleteMission style seems to be my go too for woodworking furniture. I think it compliments my skill level.
DeleteLove the design! I envy you your ability to construct so many beautiful things.
ReplyDeleteIt really isn’t unique or special but I think it will be perfect for a small apartment bedroom.
DeleteLucky daughter!
ReplyDeleteShe had better thank me since she didn’t ask for me to build it!
DeleteOooo... I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product!
ReplyDeleteI’ll keep everyone posted. I did technically start but cold weather has quickly shut me down again.
DeleteI think it will look beautiful with the contrasting woods. A fun project!
ReplyDeleteIt will make it look a bit fancier anyway.
DeleteBoth of you have a good eye for something attractive.
DeleteI wouldn't have given it a second glance, mostly because I have too many bookcases already.
DeleteLovely design. And I suspect yours (hers) will be much nicer than the one you saw.
ReplyDeleteI hope so. And if she doesn't like it, I'll find a home for it somewhere in my house.
DeleteGood project. Over the years I collected old crates and purchased some new ones. Since I am no woodworker, I stack them and change them up to my liking either for reference books or other things. When I tire of them in one spot I mix it up and change it all around. But I DO love the thought of building a nice case like that!
ReplyDeleteI had a case like that when I was young and single made out of milk crates. It was remarkably adaptive to whatever room I set it up in. I also had a board and cinder block version too which while also adaptive, wasn't as adaptive as the milk crate version.
DeleteThat will be a great project, and one your daughter will no doubt appreciate!
ReplyDeleteI like it because it isn't really a complex one so should move fairly quickly once it warms up.
