Running Man
One consideration I hadn't considered in trading vehicles was the step height to enter the vehicle. I'm six feet two inches tall with longer legs than average so for me, it wasn't a problem in the slightest. However for my vertically challenged wife and mother-in-law, the latter closing in on 80 years old at a fast clip, it was a harder affair. I looked at the options of carrying around a step stool and acting like a butler every time they wanted to enter or exit the vehicle or running boards and decided on the latter.
I priced out the running boards and they weren't bad however to have a professional installed them would cost me around $700. After watching a video, I decided I could probably to the installation myself and save that $700 for something else.
The running boards came as a kit which essentially was the running boards themselves, bolts to mount them and a set of installation directions. The directions were pretty short and after previously watching a video of someone else installing them by themselves, I really didn't need to read them and just tossed them aside. I got a socket that fit the bolts, a torque wrench to get them tight enough and a box cutter which I used to open up the box they came in and also to cut the fiberboard like liner underneath my vehicle that covered up the mounting holes. Within maybe an hour, I had the running boards installed and torqued tight.
Although I probably could have gone with other brands/styles, I chose these because I liked how they tucked up underneath the doors and really weren't very obtrusive. They do lower the ground clearance by a couple inches but in reality, if I were driving over things tall enough to hit the bottom of the running boards, those same objects are tall enough to tear into my muffler and other protective pans on the bottom of the vehicle.
However, when the door is open, they provide a large landing spot for the feet of my wife and mother-in-law and reduced their stepping height by a good 7 or 8 inches. My wife was pleased and though as of writing this, my mother-in-law hasn't seen or used them, I'm sure she will compliment me about them in words I don't understand.

That turned out great!. I like that the running boards looks like they were made with the car originally.
ReplyDeleteI do too. I really don't want a car that stands out other than a different color so it is easier to spot in a full parking lot.
DeleteExcellent job on the running boards! My three vehicles before my Subaru all had them and they were very useful for my parents and kids.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first vehicle I have had with them. I still would rather not have them but for the sake of family, I'll put up with them. At least they are easily removed later on.
DeleteSince I am short, getting into a SUV or truck was a climb. So my latest car is like a mini SUV but low like a car. I sacrificed having a higher vantage point for easy of access. My next car will be a self driving one with comfortable seats, racks, spacious trunk/space and small.
ReplyDeleteIf they ever get self driving ones that I trust, I would like mine with a lazy boy in the back.
DeleteWe have an SUV as my wife needs the height because of back problems. She has found the easiest way in is to sit on the seat and swivel in, rather that try to step in.
ReplyDeleteMy wife is only five feet tall and sadly just a few inches short of being able to use that technique.
DeleteNice job! I'm at the point in life where I'm wanting to switch to a mid-sized SUV just because it's getting harder for me to get out of a car.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind it until it becomes like it is now and everywhere is a sheet of compressed snow that is very slippery would makes getting out of a low slung car challenging. I would highly recommend the RAV4 which is my wife's daily driver. It seems like the best compromise between sedan and full sized SUV or minivan.
DeleteGreat job Ed!
ReplyDeleteI'm still able to accomplish such tasks which is a boost to my greatly diminishing ego.
DeleteI didn’t know that such additions were possible.
ReplyDeleteI didn't either until my wife and MIL both started complaining.
DeleteExcellent solution and well done. They look like they came with the vehicle.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I liked best about them. I am not one who wants a vehicle with all these extra customizations that many people spend tens of thousands of dollars on. I am more interested in a functional vehicle that gets me from point A to B with my family and possessions.
DeleteGreat solution!!
ReplyDeleteFortunately someone had the solution already in kit form!
