I'm Getting Old

I surreptitiously took this photo the other day of a trend I am seeing with more frequency. People buying white sneakers and then wearing plastic bags on them presumably to keep them looking white. I'll go out on a limb and assume that at some point, they will get to where they are going and remove said bags while inside and then put on the bags again to return home.

I don't understand all the labor that goes into preserving something that likely nobody will notice. The only reason I noticed was because this boys feet were twice as wide as normal, kind of like a duck and flapping in the breeze. But then again, perhaps that is one of those assumptions that makes an A$$ of me (reference to an old saying about assuming). Perhaps in the world that I don't frequent much anymore, the cleanliness of white shoes is actually quite noticeable among the younger generations, but only when inside.

  1. I seem to recall a white sneaker fad quite a long time ago, even in winter, but I don’t recall the plastic bags. I don’t imagine they stand up for very long.

    1. I can't either. Plus I would think they would be treacherous to wear on any sort of snow covered surface!

  2. Ed, during high school band we had to do this (we had white shoes as well), but the shoes came off for performance and then we had to polish them again.

I suspect part of the reason for the preservation is the amount of money that such shoes command now.

    1. Back in my marching band days, we just had a white dauber that we all touched up our white shoes prior to the performance.

I suspect price may be a part of it but again, I'm out of touch as my shoes typically fall on the cheaper side of the scale.

  3. What a trend! But shoes are very expensive now. Maybe white shoes staying white is the new trend. My DiL is a high school teacher and said white crew socks are a returning thing. My high school band marched with white shoes. We used to dab white shoe polish on the canvas sneakers to them sparkly white for our military style marching. Linda in Kansas

    1. We did the white polish daubing too! I know white vehicles are the latest trend and have been for awhile so perhaps it makes sense that white shoes are also trending.
