Altar Project: Adding Layers
With warmer weather finally here for good, hopefully, I am able to put in some longer hours on this project. As I have mentioned before, adhesives prefer warmer temperatures to bond and cure properly. Still, I find myself idle for small chunks of time simply because I don't have enough clamps, or at least the right kind of clamps. As you can see, I'm starting to pack out the columns by adding layers to them and to avoid using mechanical fasteners, I need a lot of clamps to hold things while the glue dries. Fortunately, glue sets up enough I can remove most of the clamps within an hour or so and fully cures within three hours. I probably could have kept going on other pieces but unfortunately, I have my tablesaw dialed into an exact 45 degrees for mitering all those corners and the next steps require me to have the blade at 90 degrees. All this is technical jargon for saying that I need to finish all these small mitered trim pieces before I can reset my saw and move onto the rest of the trim.
Pursuant to our discussion about passing on photos, I m reminded that I have many of Flickr. In point of fact they’re are more organized there, and if I need to search for an old photo, I am more likely to find it there or even on blogs than on my computer. I think a free account will still allow you to post quite a few photos.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Flickr requires login credentials? If so, knowledge of Flickr and those login credentials must bridge the span of generations. After my mom died, I found a piece of paper with a thousand different passwords written on it, many crossed out, many written several times in several different places and some that I needed not there. It was really a nightmare to untangle. I came to the conclusion that anything I leave behind online, will probably not be accessible. But of course, YMMV as they say.
DeleteRe Anvilcloud's comment. The name Flickr cracks me up. With my somewhat poor reading vision, when it is all in caps (which they present as their logo name), it looks like the epitome of swear words.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, great job so far Ed!
Thanks for the laugh and compliment!
DeleteThis is the point where things are popping and starting to look like an altar! I can already tell this is going to be SO impressive. I hope you'll be allowed to share a photo of it in its new home once completed.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too!
DeleteI wish you lived closer; I have a bucket of C clamps left that a guy paid $100 for and then never came to pick them up.
ReplyDeleteI don't use c-clamps for the most part. They are fairly specialized in use and require lots of scrap pieces of wood to protect the wood that is being clamped from marring. All mine have built on rubber feet to prevent that.
DeleteYour project is lookinh good and coming along nicely:)
ReplyDeleteIt feels like I am arriving at a major milestone. There is still a lot of work left though.
DeleteThis looks great 👍
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThat's looking good!
