Close Out

The day following my concussion, I finished the tasks at hand. Namely I got the fence around the strawberry beds hopefully deer proof until spring when I can hook the electric fencer back onto it. I hauled away the tomato vines and okra trees to the compost pile to compost. From past experience, neither degrade enough over winter to really till well the following year and mostly just get tangled in the tiller tines in big balls. I removed the last half of the fence posts that supported the tomato cages, digging them out with a shovel and put everything away. As a final act, I mowed the straw and smaller garden vegetable matter, chopping it up into fine pieces and spreading it around to decompose in place and be tilled in come springtime. The remaining greenery are what is left of our egg plant and one nearly nearly dead pumpkin vine with two small and very green pumpkins. Since I will have to mow a time or two to mulch up the leaves that pile up on our lawn, I can mow them off at a later date in hopes that we might still get something yet from our garden. Four days after the above photo, my bin of woodchips and sawdust from my woodworking projects was overflowing so I spread about 80 gallons of that on the garden and lightly tilled it in. That photo is below.

Although not very visible from this vantage point on my deck and mid day sun, the grass seeding looks healthy (the one in the front yard too) and is still green and growing slowly. I think the weather held just long enough and it should hopefully survive the winter and will look a lot better in the spring when I finally mow it and the thin mulch that helps retain the moisture that I've been adding manually.

All in all, I felt pretty good, all things considering. The neck and shoulder pain was just a subtle stiffness that was gone the next day. The light sensitivity was slight and was only noticeable when on the computer disobeying my wife's orders. But I just limited myself to just 15 minutes that day to answer emails and then stopped. By the following day, it too had disappeared. I marvel at how fortunate I was to not suffer worse and praise my still working ISO tunes ear muffs one more time.

    1. My IQ might have suffered a few points but fortunately most garden work is from the neck down!

    1. No apparent complications anyway. But as I told AC above, most garden work is from the neck down.

    1. And I'm ready for winter too... or at least a break from working in/on the garden!

    1. Little known fact but I'm partially color blind so fall colors are largely lost on me.

  5. You are lucky to live with a doctor but you also seem to have lots of common sense. In short supply these days, so an admirable quality!

    1. Well I may have knocked some of the common sense out of me with that fence post driver. Stay tuned!

    1. Definitely back to "normal" if anyone else besides my wife and kids dare to call me as such.

  7. An advertising line for those ISO earmuffs ought to be: "They also prevent fractured skulls".

  8. Ed! Aren't you supposed to be resting? Definitely sounds like you're recovering well, which is a blessing. Your garden and back yard look ready for winter.

    1. I tried... but after several hours of sitting in the chair not being able to do anything but listen to the radio drove me crazy enough that I just had to get up and putter around in the backyard.

  9. You remind me that I need to finish putting away my garden! I am hoping next year will be better than this year's as it wasn't nearly as productive as in previous years.

  10. Glad you are up and around and feeling better. Like Kelly, I love the fall colors in your picture. Have you had a freeze yet? We need one so badly as the bugs are about to carry us away!

  11. Glad you are OK and not feeling any long-term effects, Ed.
