Fitting 10 lb of (Stuff) Into a 5 lb Bag

A.I. Interpretation of the saying, "trying to stuff 10 lb of (stuff) into a 5 lb bag."

I ordered a gel infused memory foam mattress topper for our bed from Amazon and it arrived in a shrink wrapped bag in a box.

I opened it and watched it inflate to ten times its former size like a wiggling anaconda trying to wrap up it's prey on my bed.

It was too small despite having ordered the correct size.

I was told I can return it free of charge.... just put it back in the box and apply the free shipping label.

Were they going to send me a vacuum press too? Um... no.

Solutions?

I was forced to use my "one time no return exclusion" from Amazon to get my money back and to keep the wrong sized mattress topper.

I ordered another one.... from a different company. It too was sporty to unwrap but at least was the correct size.

I tried to leave a review on the first one to warm others who might order this product and be shipped the wrong one at no fault of their own.

Denied. My review focused on shipping and delivery, an important concern for a inflating vacuum sealed object.

  1. Ed, I have often wondered about those vacuum packed mattresses and toppers. Thanks for confirming my worst fears.

    1. Once we got the right size though, it was well worth the effort.

    1. I still haven't decided what to do with the wrong size one that we got to keep.

  3. Yeah, that would be hard to stuff back in, even for an engineer like thou. 😁

    1. Here in the States, if you order from Amazon, one of the ways to return it is to drop it off at a chain clothing store called Kohls, which we have one across town. It is convenient because you don't have to bother boxing it up or attaching labels. You just drop off the item, they scan a barcode off your phone and you walk out the door. But alas, this wasn't offered as a choice with this item. Not to mention, I'm not sure how I could have gotten it stuffed in the car and then across a snowy parking lot without damaging it.

  4. What a mess! I guess they sell them with the knowledge that people are unlikely to return them.

    1. Especially if they have used up their "one time exclusion" already!

  5. I didn't know there was a "one time no return exclusion". I'll try to remember that in case I order something that will never fit back into a return box. (the mental image of all this did make me smile, though it might not have been funny at the time for you)

    1. I wasn't aware of it either. Nor was I of the "bulky item return department" which I was transferred too. I figured that after 20 years of only just finding out, hopefully I can go another 20 years before I run into a problem where I would like to have used that exclusion again.

I didn't even attempt to try and fit it into the box. It was hard enough wrestling it off the bed, across the hall and onto my MIL's bed until we figure out what to do with it before her return.

  6. That's a tough one! I was hoping you would show us how, lol!

    1. It is an impossible task, hence the saying.

  7. Those things are crazy when they inflate; I had always assumed that they would be the correct size but there are so many quality control issues these days. Measurements are tricky for some companies! Does it fit any other beds in your house?

    1. Although the box had the correct size on the outside, the topper on the inside wasn't in a vacuum sealed bag like what I would have expected. Instead it looked like it had been flattened and then wound up with a roll of plastic wrap... and not neatly either. I suspect it was either returned or repurposed in the factory and inadvertently put in the wrong box. Although it is the same size as other beds, they already have a topper of some sort. I am thinking about cutting it down to fit my youngest daughter's bed.

    2. I am glad to know there is a no return exclusion. I wonder if vacuum packing might be available at those stores that provide UPS and Fedex shipping?

    3. I'm pretty sure that the answer is no, in my area anyway.

  9. We got a mattress topper in 2018. I wrote about it here. https://travelerswife.blogspot.com/2018/02/mattress-solution.html
I had to look up when and where we bought it. It was from Costco and surprisingly, it's still OK. Phew! I'm so glad I didn't have to return it.
