Super Snackcoma

I was never really a sports person. I guess a lot of that stems from the lack of television in the house I grew up in for the first 18 years of my life. That means in modern times I am generally doing something else besides sitting inside watching a sport game on television. But for many years, I watched various games on television in social settings to ... well be social, and so I have come to appreciate certain aspects of what the majority of the population does on certain weekends. I suppose that is why, my immediate family and I did watch the Superbowl and randomly cheered on the losing team (Bengals) while eating ourselves into a snackcoma and paying attention during the halftime show and commercials.

We don't do this every year, but this particular year we had nothing better going on and so my wife and I spent the weekend making various appetizers. I made a 7 layer taco dip and pigs-n-a-blanket while my wife prepared hamburger sliders and a vegetable tray with homemade hummus. Our daughters contributed pretzel bites and chocolate covered strawberries and to some extent, all of us helped in making the crab rangoons. All were delicious and we worked on them starting at noon and then throughout the evening as we watched the game.

While the food was a highlight, the game was pretty ho-hum for me. The halftime show was a sleeper and I suspect there will never be one as good as Bruno Mars again. The commercials likewise weren't very memorable. I suppose one could call the game exciting if you were a Rams or Bengals fan but being neither, for me it was just one teams hired thugs playing another teams hired thugs. But it livened up a Sunday night that probably would have been spent reading in front of a fireplace until falling asleep at a ridiculously early time. We can always do those things next weekend.

  1. Well, it gave you a good reason to make all your snacks at least! That is a good looking photo Ed, looks like all my favorites. 😋♥️♥️♥️👍

    1. The taco dip is a sentimental favorite of mine and one my mom used to make to take to various parties.

  2. When I was still very young and before we had a tv, I would turn on the radio on a Saturday evening to catch Hockey Night in Canada. But my interest has always been more on my team than hockey itself if you know what I mean.

I did follow American football for a few years way way back in the day — in the 70s mainly. Maybe I stopped because my teams got bad and I lost my interest. Not really sure.

    1. Perhaps part of the reason I'm not really into sports is that fact that my area doesn't have any professional teams. All our teams are minor leagues and none of them get televised or are close enough that I could attend on a regular basis to become attached.

  3. The Super Bowl has become a social event as much as a sporting one and it looks like your family took full advantage of that and prepared some scrumptious goodies! Like you, I had little interest in the game, but thought it was a pretty good one. I like Matthew Stafford and I'm happy for him to have a Super Bowl ring. Joe Burrow also showed a lot of class and I love the footage of him introducing him to the players for the Rams. I left the room for the halftime show because I knew it would not interest me, but it's interesting how some people (mostly the ones from my generation) did not like it at all, while others thought it was one of the best ever. Go figure.

    1. A younger acquaintance, but not that young, thought it was the best ever. I thought about commenting something to the contrary but just bit my tongue. There was nothing to gain by saying something.

  4. Those are delicious looking snacks; I am also a huge fan of 7 layer dip. I was rooting for the Bengals but not hard core. The half time show and commercials left me cold. However, many people loved the half time show and I understand why from their perspective; that isn't my favorite genre of music to start with.

    1. The first thing I thought was two-thirds of the stadium couldn’t see what was happening inside those boxes.

  5. You even had snacks for me! I didn't watch any of it. I'm more of a Puppy Bowl kinda person, though I didn't watch that, either.

    1. I’m definitely not a puppy bowl person but then again, I’ve never watched one.

  6. I work in the yard on Super Bowl Sundays. I can tell if it is a good game or not by the groans or cheers in the neighborhood of others watching the game. This year, there were no noises, so I figured it was ho-hum.

  8. The eats look great. I don't watch sports either. I don't watch TV at all . When I was a kid we got TV in 1955.

  9. Ed, I watched it for the first time in years - largely because I was in Old Home and my sister and brother in law invited me over. Such events are truly snack sorts of things. I had absolutely nothing in common with the Half Time Show, although I almost never do. As someone said, if you were under 30 or over 50, it was not your show. If you were in the 30-50 range, it was amazing.

On the bright side, it has been some years since I have seen a game that was engaging right up to the end.

    1. I suppose I might have enjoyed the halftime if I could understand what they were singing. My good standard is still Bruno Mars and he certainly isn’t from my time.

  10. How wonderful that television didn't really figure in your childhood Ed. By the way, I have no idea what crab rangoons might be. I thought it was a medical condition.

    1. LOL. They are ubiquitous here at any Chinese restaurant and if I searched, are probably not even Chinese along with about half the menu. We are great at getting various cultures to open restaurants and then converting their food into something unrecognizable in their home country.

  11. I'm with you on sports, Ed. But I suppose people like a fun distraction. Your snacks look like the real winner!

  12. Every year we watch the superbowl with friends. Every year, at the end of it, I say, "So who won?" This year, I didn't even watch the commercials. Looking back, I'm not even sure why I was there, actually.

  13. I was barely even aware of the Super Bowl this year. In fact, even now, I couldn't tell you which teams played or who won!

  14. I can see why you fell into a snackcoma. Everything looks great but I am drawn to those pretzel bites and crab. Mrs. Shife started a new food plan a few days before so the kids and I were on our own so went just stuffed ourselves with pizza.

  15. Dear Riverbend, no idiot-box (cluttering up your family's living space) during your first 18 years? Hhmmm, maybe you're better off not having had that chatter mess with your childhood and early adulthood. Most people think tv back then was innocent - no, it wasn't.

  16. Wow! That is a very impressive spread. You guys are epicureans. :-) I would love those treats even though I'm not a football fan. I watched with Art. I rather liked the Kia commercial. And yes, I liked Bruno Mars a LOT. Then again, he is from Hawaii, of course.
