Garden Eats

Despite the depressing weed situation, we were able to harvest some cherry tomatoes from the garden along with a couple pods of okra and dug up a couple hills of potatoes. The cherry tomatoes went into a tart seen above which we had for supper the next evening. It is easy to make and a favorite between my wife and I.

Although not from our garden, we did obtain some local blackberries and nectarines that my wife turned into another form of a tart. It tasted as good as it looks too.

I didn't mention this on the last post but my dad mentioned that our newly planted fruit trees that had been doing so well this spring might have died. I'm guessing it was probably due to too much moisture like everything else in our garden. I didn't walk over there to look as it was way too muddy and I was way too depressed. Maybe next time. Our local nursery has a few pear trees on discount this week and I may stop in later in the week to see if he wants to make me a deal for the remainder of them and perhaps we'll try again and hope the remainder of this year is more kind.

  1. Both look very yummy. I'm sorry to hear about your trees though. I hope you get those pear trees and have another go at it.

    1. I'm heading down to the garden in a few minutes to mow the rest of the garden and orchard so will get to make an assessment on the trees. I'm hoping they aren't completely dead and if I'm wrong, we'll try again.

  2. The tarts really do look good (I have come to enjoy them a great deal).

Unfortunate about the trees. As you say, Nature keeping us humble...

    1. We love tarts for their simplicity to make and their taste, a two-for.

  3. I am surprised that your fruit trees appear to have died as all plants strive to live. The two tarts look divine!

    1. The ground where we planted them had been canary grass sod for probably all my life. For that reason, I think it just held onto moisture really well compared to other soils that release it more quickly to the atmosphere. That combined with the wet year we've been having just over watered them. They were looking so healthy until just recently so I don't think it could be much else.

    1. In my opinion, tarts are like pizza. You can just put whatever you have handy on them and they are bound to be edible. For me, the sautéed onions between the tomatoes and the cheese layer are what make this tart so delicious.

  5. Lovely tarts! My mouth is watering over that first one especially. I'm always sad when plants/trees die. We can't control the weather, but I tend to feel responsible in some way.

    1. I've been on a long run of exceptional good fortune when it comes to planting trees so my luck was bound to run out eventually.

  6. Ooo... both tarts look delicious! I'm sorry the trees died, but hopefully you can try again with some pear trees. Our pears have produced abundantly this year!

I've certainly learned there are no guarantees in gardening.

    1. We have a pear tree on another farm that we picked and canned last year (and of which I have yet to taste for some reason) but they weren't very good eating just off the tree. I'm hoping to plant some that taste good right off the tree.

  7. My kids planted a mess of fruit trees. Out of all of them, one died. Same stock. Planted in the same soil, roughly the same place. The others are doing great, but one never took off and died right away. Trees is funny critters.

    1. They are. These three would be the first I've had die in probably ten years and the one that died ten years ago was a bare root stock and eaten by rabbits.

  8. Too much water ...and we are so dry that some of the leaves are starting to change colors. Wow that tart looks awesome!!

    1. I see on the drought maps how bad it is up your way. We've been there many times too over the years. I don't like either but if I had to choose strictly for a garden, I would take a dry year over a wet year any day.
